UFO Robo Grendizer is a brief manga edition of the anime bearing the same name. It was launched during the broadcast of the anime, narrating the tale of Duke Fleed, the ruler of Planet Fleed. Duke disguises himself as a farm laborer named Daisuke to fight against the Vegan Empire, the culprits of destroying his planet. They also happen to be the creators of Grendizer, which Duke stole to combat their forces. Even though it was not originally recognized as part of the Mazinger sequence, Koji Kabuto and the Mazinger mechas made an appearance in the series, making it a quasi-sequel. Grendizer marked the introduction of the idea of a transformable robot and a space mecha. These concepts influenced other mecha series in the future.
